Early one Sunday morning I sat down to write this biography, having read countless (too many?) blogs, opinion pieces and other website articles on how to put together your artist biography. Seems the majority of these 'experts' mainly agreed on two things; write your bio in the third person, "Stephen grew up here and Stephen's influences are, etc.." and word it so a gallery can promote you and tell people a little bit about the type of person you are.

So I did. And it was awful. I showed it to my family and they all agreed it sounded like someone trying to be something they are not. The most trusted editor in my family (my wife) went as far as saying she cannot stand reading bios like these, she wants to hear from THE person whose art she likes. I agreed.

Back to the drawing board I went.

I am a wildlife artist, living in Southern Ontario for almost my entire life, but for a few brief months where I decided to be born in beautiful Manitoba. I currently reside in Newmarket, Ontario with my wife and two children.

I am happiest when out hiking trails, canoeing around a quiet lake or out birding in the forest. This is reflected in the subject matter of my paintings where I focus mainly on birds, mammals and their environments. Ontario provides an endless variety of landscapes to inspire my work. I work mainly in acrylics with hardboard as my preferred backing for the majority of my paintings. I buy large sheets of plain hardboard and then cut it down and prepare it myself, you can read more about the materials I use on my supplies page.

I am lucky enough to have been invited to participate in Wildlife Habitat Canada’s annual Conservation Stamp and Print competition the past number of years. I've also competed in other competitions; Ducks Unlimited National Art Portfolio competition and the Oregon Game Stamp among others.

I often donate selected originals or prints to organized charitable foundations and groups in order to raise funds for endangered wildlife or for families in need. If you have a charity you think I would be interested in, please do contact me.

Many of my works are in private collections across Canada and the U.S. I hope you enjoy wandering around my website and if you have any questions about my art, my methods or anything else you see here, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I promise I will answer, not someone else talking for me!

Kingsville Migration Festival - Fall 2015

In October 2015 at the Kingville Migration Festival Fine Art Competition my painting 'Tram Stop Swallows' won 1st place overall and the People's Choice Award. It was a huge honour for me as it marked the second year in a row where I won both awards. The inspiration for the painting was my many visits over the years to the tip of Point Pelee National Park where a number of Barn Swallows nest in the shelter right next to the tip tram stop each spring.

Oregon Fish & Wildlife
2015 Upland Game Bird Art Competition

This was my first time competing in a U.S. based stamp competition. Very few states allow entries from outside of the U.S., the state of Oregon being one of them. So I thought I would give it a try, especially since the game bird for 2015 (California Quail) was one I had recently seen in the field for the first time during a trip out west. I was very pleased to hear my California Quail painting finished in second place!

Kingsville Migration Festival - Fall 2014

Fall 2014 was my first win overall in the Kingville Migration Festival Fine Art Competition, my previous best being a second-place finish the year before. My 'Cowbird' painting also took home the People's Choice Award for favourite painting as voted on by the attendees of the weekend festival. I was interested to see how a painting of what many consider to be a 'nuisance' bird would do in a competition. Afterwards a number of folks at the festival mentioned they couldn't recall seeing one painted so maybe that worked in my favour!
